WCPS Employee Handbook 2023-2024

Section 2, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SEPARATION FROM EMPLOYMENT Failure to Report to Work Statement Any employee who fails to report to his assigned duty station for three (3) or more consecutive duty days without notice to his immediate supervisor shall immediately forfeit his employment rights and shall be deemed to have voluntarily quit his job. Termination will be effective at the end of the last day worked. Such employees shall be excluded from subsequent employment with the Wicomico County Board of Education without the approval of the Director of Human Resources or Superintendent of Schools. In most instances where the employee quits without proper notice, it will not be possible for that employee to receive his paycheck on the next regular pay date. As a result, the regular amount of the employee’s semi-monthly pay will be adjusted to reflect the termination, and shall result in a delay to the next regular pay period. Any payable fringe benefits, including annual leave, will be forfeited. Comp time, if applicable, will be paid on the last regular pay date. Example: if an employee quits without notice on the 28th day of October and normally would have worked through the 31st of October, the employee will not receive a paycheck on their regular pay date of October 31st, but will instead receive a paycheck on November 15th, covering the days he worked from October 16 through the date of his resignation. Reduction in Force Statement For information regarding termination resulting from a reduction in workforce, please refer to the current negotiated agreement between the Wicomico County Board of Education and the Wicomico County Education Association - Education Support Personnel. Classified Notice of Resignation Statement Any employee in the classified service of the Wicomico County Board of Education is expected to give written notice of at least ten (10) working days prior to resignation. Such notice must be in writing and carry the signature of the employee. The employee will be considered to have not met the requirements of this policy until written notification of resignation is delivered to the employee's immediate supervisor and the Director of Human Resources. Any employee who vacates his or her position without proper notice as defined by Board policy and/or their individual employment contract shall forfeit any accrued salary or fringe benefits, including annual leave pay, to which they would otherwise be entitled. The Superintendent of Schools may, for emergency reasons, consider adjustments in this policy on a case by case basis. Certificated Notice of Resignation Statement A minimum of 30 days written notice, per Regular or Provisional contract signed upon hire. A minimum of 30 days written notice would apply to all Administrative and Executive staff members in Units 2 and 5, not on a Regular or Provisional Contract. Refer to the current negotiated agreement between the Wicomico County Board of Education and the Wicomico County Education Association - Education Support Personnel.
